Based on one of the best platforms ever designed for learning to fly radio-controlled (RC) aircraft, its large size and 1.5 meter wingspan provides better visibility and the ability to easily handle stronger winds while learning to fly in an RC club.
Its inherently stable design and SAFE® (Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope) technology, with its Beginner, Intermediate and Experienced flight modes, make flying easy, especially with instructor assistance. The addition of exclusive Spektrum™ Smart components including a lithium polymer (LiPo) battery and charger make charging more convenient and safe (battery and charger sold separately for the BNF® Basic version). Best of all, there is now the option to upgrade to GPS SAFE Plus technology which offers features such as ''AutoLand and Virtual Fence'', plus the ability to install the all-new Landing Assist Sensor (LAS) which automatically turns on for a soft landing, making it easier than ever to learn to fly and stay safe on the ground!
The RTF (Ready-To-Fly) version includes everything you need to fly in one box, and is the perfect choice if you are a beginner RC pilot. From the Spektrum DXe 2.4GHz transmitter that you can use with other Bind-N-Fly® (BNF) and BNF Basic aircraft after learning to fly the STS Apprentice, to the 3S 3200mAh Smart LiPo battery that offers long flight times and the convenient S120 USB-C Smart charger that can be used with a variety of USB power sources, there's nothing more to buy or provide! A BNF Basic version is also available for experienced pilots and clubs who want to use their favorite Spektrum transmitter with batteries and chargers they already own.
And for both versions, the powerful and efficient brushless power system including a Smart ESC, as well as the flight controller, receiver and servos, are all factory installed in the robust EPO airframe that assembles quickly and easily without the need for glue or special tools.
And the fun doesn't stop after you learn to fly! In experienced mode, the 1.5m STS Apprentice is capable of aerobatic maneuvers, including loops, rolls, backflips and more. You'll even be able to install the optional floats to take off and land on the water.

LEARN TO FLY SUCCESSFULLY WITH SAFE TECHNOLOGY
If this is your first RC airplane, Horizon Hobby's exclusive SAFE (Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope) technology prevents over-control and crashes while offering multiple flight modes to give you more control and capability as your skills progress:

BEGINNER MODE
In this flight mode, the aircraft has pitch and bank angle limits to prevent over-control, which can lead to loss of orientation and collisions with the ground. When the control levers are released, the aircraft automatically returns to level flight, allowing you to relax and enjoy simply "driving" the aircraft through the sky. This flight mode also makes takeoff and landing easier.
INTERMEDIATE MODE
This flight mode allows more freedom in pitch and bank, but still prevents significant over-control, and the airplane does not return to level flight by itself. This allows you to make tighter turns and climb and descend faster as your skills progress. In addition, Beginner mode automatically activates and resets the aircraft to level flight when it descends to less than 30 feet above the ground and the control sticks are released, which is no longer the case in Intermediate mode.
EXPERIENCED MODE
In Experienced mode, there are no pitch or bank angle limits, so you have complete control! You can perform aerobatic maneuvers, including loops, rolls, backflips, stall turns and more. Panic recovery can be activated by switching to
PANIC RECOVERY
If you lose control of the aircraft in intermediate or experienced flight mode, simply switch to beginner mode and release the control sticks. The SAFE technology will automatically level the aircraft.

EASY UPGRADE TO SAFE® PLUS GPS COMPATIBLE TECHNOLOGY
With a quick and easy installation of the Spektrum GPS module (SPMA3173; sold separately), you can add next-level autonomous guidance features that make learning to fly even easier.

With SAFE Plus, you get:
AUTOLAND
Activated at the touch of a button, the advanced AutoLand feature puts the aircraft on a stabilized approach to land alone near the GPS initialization point. You can even provide a few directional commands to avoid obstacles or adjust the approach while letting the system do the rest for a safe landing. As your skills progress and you gain confidence, you can take control of more commands, and then learn to land without the help of the
system.

MODEL HOLD PROFILE
This very useful feature, exclusive to SAFE Plus, essentially allows you to "pause" the flight by placing the aircraft in a GPS-guided holding pattern. When activated by a quick button press, the aircraft will automatically return to a position above the GPS initialization point and circle until the command is cancelled by another quick button press. This is an excellent way to safely hand over control to a friend or regain visual contact should you lose sight of the model.

VIRTUAL BARRIER
It's easy to accidentally let an RC plane fly too far, but with Virtual Fence, you don't have to worry.
It creates an invisible boundary that the plane won't cross. When the plane reaches this boundary, it automatically turns around and returns to the GPS initialization point. Then it "wiggles" the wings to let you know you can regain control. The all-new Spektrum Landing Aid Sensor (SPMA3180; sold separately) is easy to install and provides automatic flare control to help inexperienced pilots "fine-tune" landings by minimizing or completely eliminating bounce.

SPEKTRUM SMART BATTERY AND CHARGER
The RTF version includes a Spektrum 3S 3200mAh Smart LiPo battery that offers long flight times, as well as a Smart S120 USB-C charger that can be used with a variety of USB power sources. Simply connect the battery to the charger, and the exclusive Smart Technology will determine and begin charging at the best speed to properly and safely charge the battery automatically.

INTELLIGENT ELECTRONIC SPEED CONTROLLER (ESC)
The Apprentice STS 1.5m is equipped with a proprietary Smart ESC that can provide a variety of real-time telemetry data related to the power system, including engine speed, current, battery voltage and more with Spektrum AirWare™ compatible transmitters (including DX6e and 8e, DX6 and 8 G2, DX9, iX12 and others).

STRONG AND DURABLE DESIGN
EPO material construction provides a lightweight, durable airframe that is strong enough to withstand the stresses of daily flight without buckling. The wing attaches to the fuselage with bungee cords so it can twist or separate freely in the event of a hard landing or collision to minimize damage. And if, unfortunately, you damage parts or components of the airframe and can't repair them, a full range of replacement parts is readily available.

EASY ASSEMBLY
The Apprentice STS 1.5m comes largely factory assembled with the power system, flight controller, receiver and servos installed. All you have to do is complete a quick and easy final assembly, without the use of glue or special tools, and you'll be ready to fly in less time than it takes to charge a battery!

TRICYCLE LANDING GEAR
The wide tricycle landing gear with steerable nose wheel provides better ground handling for easy takeoffs and landings on a variety of surfaces, from hard runways to grass and even dirt.

OPTIONAL FLOATS
