Aircraft VQ P-38 Lightning (Silver) 82.6" Wingspan ARF

The Lockheed P- 38 Lightning was an American propeller-driven fighter aircraft of the Second World War. Developed to meet the needs of the US Army Air Corps, the P- 38 had a number of distinctive features. It had two engine nacelles and a single central nacelle containing the cockpit and armament. the P- 38 was used in a number of roles, including interception, dive-bombing, level-bombing, ground attack, night combat, photographic reconnaissance, radar and visual guidance for bombers and evacuation missions, and largely as a long-range escort fighter when equipped with drop tanks under its wings.

The P- 38 was used most successfully in the Pacific and China-Burma-India theaters, as the aircraft of top American aces Richard Bong (40 victories), Thomas McGuire (38 victories) and Charles H. MacDonald (36 victories). In the Southwest Pacific theater, the P- 38 was the U.S. Air Force's main long-range fighter until the appearance of a large number of P- 51D Mustangs towards the end of the war.

The P- 38 was exceptionally quiet for a fighter, exhaust gases being muffled by turbochargers. It was extremely forgiving and could be mismanaged in many ways, but the roll rate in early versions was too slow for it to excel as an aerial fighter. The P- 38 was the only American fighter in production throughout American participation in the war, from Pearl Harbor to V-J Day. At the end of the war, orders for 1887 examples were cancelled.
