The Saito FA-180 is quickly becoming the choice of pilots to power aircraft in the 1.20-1.50 size range. The FA-180 offers a 20% increase in displacement over the popular Saito FA-150. What does this mean? An 8% increase in power on the FA-150 and 14% on the FA-120. In addition, the FA-180 fits in the 1.20 rack size. So you can replace your old 120 with the Saito FA-180 without changing engine mounts.
The 4-stroke FA-180 is based on the popular and powerful FA-150.
To achieve the extra 20% displacement, Saito increased both the stroke by 1mm (to 28.6mms) and the bore by 2mm (to 36mm) on the 1.50. To feed this giant, the carb bore was increased to 12mm and the inside of the exhaust openings were significantly enlarged, for freer breathing. And, like other Saito engines, the 180 is available in a natural finish as standard or as a GK (Golden Knight) version with a glossy black case and gold valve covers.
On the dyno test of the FA-180 in comparison to the many Saito 150S with fuel 15% a 16x8 APC proposal we recorded an increase of 500 rpm with the 180 over the 150, with a peak at 9400 RPM.
One can also climb without fear of overheating in a 30% mixture with the Saito 180, an APC 16x8 has a 9800 RPM - that's over 400 rpms with the 15% fuel.
The 180 proves to be easy to fly and start. And, unlike many other four-strokes, it doesn't seem to be overly critical of spark plugs.
We noticed that the 180 consumes a 16 oz. tank in just 9 minutes on full throttle. If you want to fly longer, a larger tank is recommended.
