This type of yacht was designed as a fast boat for the use and pleasure of the Swedish King Gustav III. However, it was also used in naval battles, such as that of Svenksund against the Russian Empire. Launched in 1778, she was built at the Djurgarden shipyard in Stockholm, to a design by Fredrik Chapman: he was the first naval architect to codify hull design, supported by precise mathematical relationships; indeed, at the time, all naval designs were the fruit of experience and empirical methods alone. Equipped as a "schooner", the AMPHION's tapered hull lines gave it excellent nautical qualities. This model is based on original documents from 1790.
