The Greundiek was built in 1949 under the name "Hermann-Hans" at the Rickmers shipyard in Bremerhaven; it was launched in January 1950. The ship was one of the first ships built in Germany after World War II and one of the first fully welded civilian ships. In 1965, the "Hermann-Hans" was sold to Henry Dölling, who renamed the ship "Rita Dölling" in honor of his wife.1986, the municipality of Stade bought the ship for the navigation school of Grünendeich, which carries out on board teaching modules for training as a ship's engineer. In 1994, the Alter Hafen Stade e. V. the Greundiek of the district of Stade. After the first repair work on the dock of the Hamburg Norderwerft, the ship was delivered in the port of Stade on 22 April of the same year. There, she was restored until 2000 and put back in a roadworthy condition. The ship, which has been largely preserved in its original condition, is listed as a technical cultural monument in the Lower Saxony register of movable cultural monuments. At the end of January 2003, the Alter Hafen Stade e. V. the state prize of the Lower Saxony Sparkasse Foundation for the preservation of monuments for the restoration of the ship. The Alter Hafen Stade e. V. maintains and operates this unique museum ship with its volunteer members since 1994. The ship is approved for coastal voyages. Today the MS Greundiek is used for all kinds of events and public voyages on the Elbe and in the Baltic Sea region.
