Designed by the famous naval architect Jeremiah Burham, the FLYING FISH was launched in 1850 in Essex, Massachusetts. For over 20 years, it was the representative hull of the Market Schooner class. The FLYING FISH was one of the fastest vessels in Gloucester's fishing fleet, thanks to her special construction features and extensive sail area. These qualities enabled her to transport fish from the famous Banks to the various market ports in record time, facilitating sales and boosting profits. The general layout of the deck fittings, as well as the coloring, which respected a precise tradition, remained unaltered for a long time.
