This was the first survey vessel for which we have reliable data today. When, on August 26, 1768, the ENDEAVOUR, under the leadership of the famous James Cook, weighed anchor at Plymouth, there were 94 people on board, including officers, scientists, crew and servants. The ENDEAVOUR, before being purchased by the British Admiralty as the EARL of PEMBROKE, had been transporting coal between England and Scandinavia; the Admiralty transformed the ship, making her suitable for scientific exploration. The mast was completely replaced, and the hull was clad in brass and oak. Numerous swivel-mounted cannons were also installed along the walls.
